2018 R. Asini (Zinfandel/Sangiovese)

Down and up, up and down, like a roller coaster with streamers and confetti to celebrate a psychedelic ride. Asini is a chock full of playful surprises, a kaleidoscope of gustatory delights. Sweet sage, cherry juice, root beer, lip smacking red licorice mingled with raspberry cream. Heavy red fruits on the palate belie its soft garnet shimmer, though a layer of dusty spies, white pepper, cardamom and garam marsala provides a delightful rush. Got your ticket? Step right up and take your seat.

2018 Petite sirah

So there you are, minding your own business & chewing on a rope of licorice (red or black, take your pick), when you spot that chrome-slicked Harley Sportster on the side of the road, its rider sweaty & glistening in the west side Paso Robles heat. Your brain says, “Whoa!” but your palate says, “Yes!” This Syrah has all the richness of ripened plums, layered with all-spice, raspberry, cinnamon, vanilla & potpourri, brightened with a briary dash of olallieberry. Racy yet slick & smooth. It beckons you to hop on the back of that bike & take a ride on the wild side

2020 Tannat

Smoke from the great hall’s expansive hearths have blackened its walls. Roaring flames lick at the conquered boar turning and roasting on a spit. The lord of the manor, a giant warrior of Utland, throws back his head, bellowing praises of his stealth raid through the heathers of Midgard. He drinks heartily from a carafe, the potion’s opaque lustiness mingling seductively with the iodine-tinged aromas of the smoking meat. The manse is warmed with the air of sweet tobacco, black currants, cassis and musky with the incense of spiced leather. This powerful libation before me is certainly worthy of my vigor, the giant exclaims to his fellow lords, gathered for celebration. But in his present somnolent state, he feels rather generous, almost willing to steal back inside the fence of men and hobnob with his diminutive counterparts. Perhaps he would, if only they were so worthy.

2020 Grenache/syrah rose-

A parade of pomegranate popsicles and a party on the playa. This potion promises a punchy potpourri of playful plenty. It evokes leis of pink-purple petals and watermelon orchids strewn about a promenade, as a dusty haze of dusk proclaims a picture of pleasure, with pops of pippin, rhubarb, and flashes of white spice and currants. Did we say pink pleasure? Alas, pay prudence, for our Party Princess is stingy, so pamper persuasively to partake of her precious possession

2018 Leros (Rhone Blend)

52% Syrah, 33% Mourvedre & 15% Grenache. Peering through a frosted window of ruby & garnet, your eyes set upon a dazzling figure, refined, stout, debonair. The wine exudes floral aromas of rose & hibiscus, a touch of tea & saffron, even a dash of sarsaparilla & licorice. Rich, also, with strawberry compote, black cherry, cumin & mocha. It embraces your senses with earthy warmth, like freshly turned soil in a mythical garden. Leros is an enchanting blend of 52% Syrah, 33% Mourvedre & 15% Grenache. If a wine could think, think, think…you just might stop to smell some exotic roses, or follow that smoky haze for a friendly tête-à-tête with that dashing dilettante in the confines of his rustic, woodsy lair.

2018 Asini

A brash blend of Sangiovese Zinfandel, a carnival midway-Cliff Hanger of a ride. Strap it on. Still, there’s slickness to Asíni, like George Jones’ smoothest of Tennessee whiskies, here in a bottle of wine. Flavors burst like a box of waxy Crayola colors, all cloves & oranges, cherry liqueur, cotton candy, & mince pie, dried cranberry, blueberry, raspberry, yet it retains a musky air, like a boudoir in a Southern manse. Wafts of butterscotch & potpourri, & the richness of red velvet cake show off the wine’s playfulness, but vibrant acidity reminds us that it is meant for serious fare, a sauce ala marinara with anchovies & peppered sausage layered on lasagna noodles or some such decadent carbohydrate, because that’s the only thing that will quiet the riot that is breaking out inside as you sip away. To paraphrase the Possum: This one’s hotter than a two-dollar pistol, & faster than a graviton.

Non Vintage Chardonnay

Relish the deep golden hues, savor the rich scents of toasted vanilla, spicy pear & caramel liqueur, wafting amid the aromas of grandma’s baked bread. But don’t be lulled by the warm coziness: This is a bold, assertive wine that dances with lively flavors of kiwi, tangerine, & crème bruleé as it two-steps over your tongue with a lively flourish. A meaty Dungeness crab would certainly not object to being devoured if offered such an accompaniment.

2019 Aria (Rhone Blend)

The empress ascends the temple steps, resplendent in a headdress studded with garnet and desert jasper stones, gliding as if on rose-tinged clouds. Yet she is firmly bound to the land of lush red fruits and magical herbs. A regal queen, entitled by birthright, she is nonetheless generous and merciful, imploring her subjects to bask in their fortunes to indulge in dreams of bountiful orchards and fields of black cherries, ripened raspberries, plums, pomegranates, and succulent strawberries to embrace the earthy aromas of dried sage and thyme, cardamon, cumin, and nutmeg. This is their kingdom, too. She pauses at the temple doors, then turns to her followers and gaily tosses handfuls of rose petals. They gasp and swoon with adulation.

2018 Delos (Bordeaux blend)

44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Cabernet Franc & 20%Merlot. This wine performs like a take-all-or-nothing power couple. Roll the camera: Daniel Craig, cunning eyes & sweat-free on his arm escorting with casual deference an assured Sigourney Weaver, her sassy curls illumed by the lights sparkling off a garnet red carpet on their way to both save & conquer the universe. Sage & other dried herbs, violets, cherry blossoms & expensive flowers whose names we can’t pronounce, mingle with forest duff, cassis, menthol, & mellow licorice, contrasted by the woodsy air of cedar, pencil lead & chalk, clueing us that this wine has a distinct Paso Westside edge. Yes, Délos steels us with the resolve of both terrestrial & intergalactic warriors, ready to wield our honed swords to fend off invaders of an alter-universe. A little James Bond, a little Alien a lot of chutzpah.

2019 Syrah

Like a little Goldilocks, precious and precocious, she skips merrily along the forest’s damp and fulsome duff, coveting the wood’s treasures of wild blackberry, strawberry, and plums that hang low from moss-covered branches of gnarly trees. The basket is filled, brimming with fruits of her adventure, when a smoky plume aswirl with spices draws her to a weathered stone abode. Its slightly ajar door beckons her enter and enjoy the cozy warmth inside, perhaps to indulge in a bite of delicious morsels spread on a table. But what here? she exclaims. An enormous bear seated before a fire, tobacco pipe in paw, a goblet filled with a deep elixir at his side. “Oh my garnet goodness!” she cries. From the kitchen a mama bear emerges, an inquisitive chubby cub in tow, clamoring for the surprise guest’s basket of harvested delectables. These bears are cute, Goldilocks muses, but they are not so little after all. With a tinge of trepidation, she offers up her treasures, as they, in turn, oblige her with a splash of their mysterious juicy potion.

2019 Zinfandel

A troupe of mischief makers emerges at twilight, when the violet sky morphs into a miasma of blackberry and plum. They leap from vine to vine in slippers of sparkling ruby, warmed in scarves scented with cinnamon and cassis. Entranced, the elfin pranksters conjure scoops of wild berries atop shortcake, giddily tossing pieces of candied licorice into each other’s mouths. Whiffs of salted caramel and hoisin alight on a breeze from a not-so-distant shore - an enticing blend of sweet and savory. The spritely spirits lock arms and dance an exuberant jig before breaking out thimblefuls of cola to toast the deepening night, the juices of cherry and strawberry dribbling wantonly from delighted lips. This is their night for lip-smacking merriment beneath the magical moonlight.

2018 Sangiovese

The wine sits in your glass, bright & shiny red like a Christmas ball ornament. There's a caravan of aromas here, a melange of cardamon, all spice & minced meat, whiffs of strawberry & Jolly Rancher candy. Ho ho ho, indeed! Raspberry, rosehip, a dash of nutmeg, dusted herbs of sage & thyme liven up the palate. Don't let the candied apple color fool you: This wine is suitable for the most rare of meaty treats, like albino bison jerky (the winemaker has made it his zealous quest to hunt such a thing down). Meanwhile, declare every 25th of the month Christmas Day & celebrate with this bottle

2018 Touriga Nacional

It is writ in the good book of Disney that one might, on a magical occasion, chance to journey with Mr. Toad on his wild ride, escorted by a companion of hale constitution (perhaps in fishnet stockings & feathered headdress). If only that could be, then this wine would be an appropriate quaff to share, because it’s INTENSE! There! We said it, in CAPS & WITH EXCLAMATION POINTS!! This wine grabs the palate & holds on, with outrageous flavors of tart cherry pie & wild berry, a dusting of fertile soil burnished with toasted coriander & cedar, a whiff of blackberry laced with blueberry compote - all of it steadied by a steely rail of tannins & acidity. This amphibious ride will rock your consciousness. Touriga Nacional is a Portuguese varietal that you should bravely explore in its varied forms, especially over a repast of richly sauced edibles, with a handful of crushed velvet linen to wipe away the crumbs.

2018 Merlot

Ruby red, swarthy - the kind of wine you want to warm up your meat & potatoes. It starts with a nose rich with cherry compote, pomegranate, plum & mulled spice, complemented by blood-red rose petal, lavender, & cinnamon. A spicy bite on the palate, mingled nicely with cassis, vanilla & poached black cherries, suggests that this wine has a rhythm & beat far deeper than toasted red bone (whatever that is: Ask your local blues man). It's a bit on the gutsy side. Fire up the Dutch oven & slow cook your way to contentment.

2019 R. sangiovese

The market is abuzz the merchants await the young lord Alladin and his entourage of sycophants, just arrived on their dusty magic carpets. Bedecked in a tunic of red velvet and sparkling rubies, the mischievous master holds court before a table of spice vendors, hawking pouches of Middle Eastern wonders - cumin, coriander, anise, fennel. He inhales and sways at the fragrances, yet the bazaar tempts him with so many more intoxicants: cups of rose hip tea and sassafras, smoked lamb with rosemary, loaves of pumpernickel and rounds of Za’atar bread, and a whole aisle of cherries - an array of cherries, dark and bright ones, juicy sweet and tart ones, some dipped in chocolate, others baked and stuffed inside pastries. Alladin longs to bathe in the succulence of all these cherries. He summons his submissive attendants: Where is my genie who can prepare me such a bath?
